Michael Jordan was back on the court Tuesday, swishing jump shots and talking tough.

No, he’s not making another comeback.

In an effort to get more involved with his slumping team, the Charlotte Bobcats’ part-owner jumped into a drill during the team’s practice. He then gave tips to some young players and showed he still has that famous shooting touch.

“This was more or less for the morale of the players,” Jordan said. “The last couple of days it has been all about trying to get them to focus on the little things and to play as a team.”

The workout came a day after Jordan sat in on team meetings and film sessions as the Bobcats try to end a stretch of 10 losses in 12 games under first-year coach Sam Vincent.

Miami 117, Phoenix 113

The Phoenix Suns wanted to make sure Dwyane Wade didn’t beat them with his trademark driving, slashing game.

He and the rest of the Miami Heat did it by making one jumper after another, instead.

Wade scored 10 of his 31 points in the final four minutes and the Heat ended their longest road trip of the season with a 117-113 victory over the Suns on Monday night.

“I’m getting a lot more comfortable with my game, especially with my pull-up jumper,” said Wade, who scored 16 in Miami’s 40-point first quarter. “I wanted to come out and be real aggressive and put some pressure on them.”

Miami Heat head coach Pat Riley instructs his team against the Phoenix Suns during the fourth quarter of an NBA basketball game Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 in Phoenix. The Heat won 117-113.

“It’s the best win for us this year, obviously,” Heat coach Pat Riley said. “We need them. Sometimes in April or March you’ll look back and say there might have been a breakthrough game, a confidence game for you when you have to get through a lot of stuff.”

Heat have a long road back to respectability

The Miami Heat had just blown an 18-point lead to the Golden State Warriors some three hours earlier, their fifth loss in a row, dropping them to the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

The losses had worn on Riley, and the 62-year-old coach blamed himself for Miami’s latest collapse because he hadn’t made a single substitution in the fourth quarter, denying Dwyane Wade the energy needed to close out the game. Needing to clear his head in the cool Southern California air, Riley peered over the railing and onto Wilshire Boulevard. There was a time when they held championship parades for him here, but that all seemed so far away.

Chris Riley looked at her husband standing on the balcony and smiled.

“Honey, it’s not worth it,” she cracked. “Don’t do it.”

“That’s the value of an NBA wife,” Riley said Sunday afternoon, retelling the same story he had told his players 2½ hours earlier

Kidd wants to play with James in Cleveland

There was no migraine headache holding Jason Kidd out of the New Jersey Nets‘ loss to the New York Knicks Wednesday night, but a superstar sending a message to a floundering franchise that he’s irate with management and teammates, several league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

As the Nets flew back to New Jersey late Tuesday from a victory over Cleveland, sources said Kidd already had decided he would be sitting out against the Knicks in the Meadowlands. Kidd didn’t tell Nets officials until Wednesday afternoon, but several people inside and outside the organization were made aware of the meaning behind his sick day.

Yet Kidd has been frustrated with some of his teammates’ inability to stay on the floor and play through pain, especially Vince Carter. These days, everything about the Nets bothers Kidd. Everyone had to wonder Wednesday night: Could this have been the beginning of the end for Jason Kidd and the New Jersey Nets?
