Teaching Basketball Basics
Whenever I am speaking to a group of brand new or inexperienced youth basketball coaches, I will speak to the topic of “who is your mentor”. When a coach is attempting to put together a coaching plan of action, including how to teach, what to teach and when to teach it, I always point out that who they ask for advice should be of strategic importance to them.
When seeking investment advice, so often people will ask their neighbor, co-worker or a relative for some “how-to” or “what-to” type of advice. Does the person asking really know if the one being asked has investment success? If not, why would someone put their money on the line without having a mentor with a successful investment track record? Continue Reading »

The 2 Absolute Best Exercises to Increase Vertical Leap
Forget all the confusion about complex training regimes to increase vertical leap. Let’s get to back to basics. Athletes with the biggest vertical leaps are as strong as hell!
For instance, did you know that weightlifters have the highest vertical leap of any athlete in any other sport?
It’s true.
There are many other elite athletes that have vertical leaps reaching 40 inches. Athletes such as sprinters, footballers and shot putters train for brute strength and power, don’t necessarily need a large vertical leap, yet have one due to their training.
After much research, I found a common theme amongst athletes who have large vertical leaps. They are extremely strong in 2 exercises in particular…the squat and the power clean.
Now by strong I mean being able to squat at least double their bodyweight and power cleaning 1.5 times their bodyweight. Here are some examples.
BRIAN URLACHER
In high school was drilled about training legs in the weight room. His coach didn’t care if they didn’t get all their upper body in, as long as they got in their squats and power cleans.
At 6’4 and 258lbs, he runs 4.57 in the 40yard dash, and has a 38 inch vertical leap. He can power clean 405lbs, and squats 555lbs!
VERNON DAVIS
The 49ers tight end has been labelled as a freak of nature. At 6’3 and 253lbs, he can run a 4.38 second 40 yard dash and has a 42 inch vertical. He is also an obsessive weight trainer who can squat 685lbs and power clean 355lbs.
BEN JOHNSON
There are rumours that Ben Johnson never did any plyometric training. All he focused on was heavy weights and sprinting. I even read that he refused to run more than 100m because he wanted to be as explosive, and have as many fast twitch fibres firing as possible.
Ben Johnson was extremely explosive and was known for having the best starts of his era. This can be directly related to him being able to squat 600lbs for 6 reps, when he only weighed 190lbs!
Now I don’t want to speculate about steroids helping him lift this much, but you cannot ignore the correlation between his strength to his speed and explosiveness.
MAURICE GREENE
Former world record holder running 9.79 seconds in the 100m can squat 500lbs at a weight of 175. This gave him a huge vertical leap and a tremendous start out of the blocks.
MATT SHIRVINGTON
Australian sprinter, also known for his explosive starts can power clean 120kg and squat 200kg. This is all while weighing 80kg.
NICU VLAD
A 220lb world record holding weightlifter once recorded a 42 inch vertical leap! This was with no warm up and while wearing heavy weight lifting shoes.
MARK HENRY
WWE wrestler who competed at the Olympics for weightlifting can at 6’3 dunk a basketball. This is amazing, considering he weighs 385lbs! Along with his world calibre snatches and clean and jerks, he can squat 1000 pounds and deadlift 900.
BROCK LESNAR
Former amateur and professional wrestler, UFC fighter Brock Lesnar is a phenomenal athlete. He once tried out for the NFL and at 6’3 and 283 lbs recorded a 4.65 40 yard dash and a 35 inch vertical. This is incredible without even taking into consideration he was banged up from a fairly serious motorcycle accident a few weeks prior to the test!
He can also bench press 475 pounds and squat 695 pounds.
FRED ‘DR SQUAT’ HATFIELD
Powerlifter who at 255 pounds can squat over 1000pounds! No wonder he has recorded a vertical leap of 40 inches.
Although squats and power cleans aren’t the only 2 exercises to help increase vertical leap, you cannot ignore the underlying theme amongst all these athletes. They are all extremely strong, in relation to their bodyweight in these 2 lifts.

If you find that after you have read this piece about backyard basketball
courts that you have something to contribute. Please share your thoughts and
memories of playing basketball in your driveway or backyard with a comment at
the end.
How To Select An Outdoor Basketball Hoop
One of the most common sights in the US is an outdoor basketball hoop mounted
on a wall next to a paved driveway, on the sidewall of a house or over the
garage door. These outdoor hoops are easy to install, require little maintenance
and are not in the way of people or vehicles. In contrast, portable or in-ground
systems have to be set up more carefully.
Most professional quality
basketball hoop, goal and flooring, everything you need to bring excitement to
your gymnasium or backyard basketball court is what many people want. Every
basketball hoop, goal, court flooring should be durable all weather, colorful,
low maintenance and built for recreational use or aggressive basketball hoop
professionals.
Most manufacturers sell wall-mounted hoops as packages that
comprise a backboard, rim, net, and mounting kit. Some of these outdoor hoops
also have an extension arm that allows the rim and net to extend outwards.
The portable hoops are equally easy to use. They need no formal installation
because they come with a wheel-mounted base that can be filled with water or
sand for stability What’s more they can be wheeled back into a garage after a
game is over. These outdoor hoops are especially suitable for those players who
play once in a while, and don’t want to block there drive ins or backyards with
a basketball hoop.
Those who prefer permanent structures have the option of
installing in-ground systems. These outdoor hoops require more effort and time
to set up, because a hole has to be dug to install the pole. According to
installation kits, six 90-pound bags of cement need to be used to secure the
pole. Otherwise, there is the danger of the pole coming unstuck when a player
holds onto a basket during a dunk.
A disadvantage of an in-ground system is
that the ground has to be dug up whenever the basketball pole is to be moved. To
reduce the damage, a few equipment makers sell bolt on systems. These systems
bolt the basketball pole to an anchor that has been set in concrete.
There
are two other points that need be kept in mind while using outdoor hoops. The
first is the shape the backboard. Fan-shaped backboards may look pretty but they
should be avoided because it is difficult to play bank shots against such a
background. The second is the backboard color. It should be opaque so that the
player is able to make out the basket when playing in an outdoor environment.

Everyone knows the Western Conference is loaded. Every team currently seeded
first through ninth can claim it has a shot at winning the championship. Barring
injury (sorry Houston) they all have a legitimate chance. But while all of them
have superior strengths to flaunt, each also has its own flaws. Here are the
potential trouble spots each contender has to guard against. San Antonio Spurs: Fatigue, both
mental and physical. Going through the wars last year to win it all and then
enduring the grind of trying to repeat can drain the Spurs enough to suffer an
early exit. Somehow coach Gregg Popovich will need to rest his aging veterans as
he goes for a top-four seed and home-court advantage. The Spurs do have a deep
bench, so that should help. Los Angeles Lakers: Their bench. As
great as the Lakers have played this year, one question persists: Can they
continue to perform at a high level under playoff pressure? For a team to win a
championship, it usually has to have an effective second unit. Regardless of how
great Kobe Bryant and the rest of the starting five are, Jordan Farmar, Sasha
Vujacic, Ronny Turiaf and the rest of the bench brigade better be ready.
