U.S. Beats Virgin Islands in Americas Basketball Tournament

By Dan Bollerman

Bloomberg) — Michael Redd and Carmelo Anthony each scored 22 points to lead the U.S. to a 123-59 victory over the U.S. Virgin Islands at the FIBA Americas basketball tournament last night.

Amare Stoudemire and Mike Miller added 13 points each for the U.S. (2-0), which outscored the Virgin Islands 42-13 in the first quarter at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

The U.S. can clinch a berth at the 2008 Olympics by reaching the Americas tournament final. The Americans missed a chance to qualify for the Beijing Games when they finished third in last year’s World Basketball Championship.

Kevin Sheppard had 11 points to lead the Virgin Islands (0- 1), which is a territory of the U.S.

In last night’s other Group B game, it was Brazil 75, Canada 67. In Group A, it was Uruguay 88, Panama 84; and Mexico 100, Puerto Rico 89.

In today’s games, Mexico meets Panama, Canada faces the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico plays Argentina, and Brazil meets Venezuela. Group play ends Aug. 26 and the tournament runs through Sept. 2.
