It’s the month of March once again and the end of the NCAA basketball season is coming to an close. With the final leg of the season about to begin and the march to NCAA March Madness is starting to begin in the press and all the media. NCAA teams are winding down to their last games of the season and getting ready for their divisional tournaments. Then comes the big day for NCAA teams and that of course is the day that they find out if they are going to get a spot in the big tourney. Selection Sunday is on March 15th and there are a lot of teams who’s fate is hanging in balance with their last few games of the season.
Barring some major upsets in the final days leading up to selection Sunday the top teams are pretty much set with very little wiggle room. It’s the lower half of the bracket of 64 that becomes of great interest to most fans. Why because somewhere in that bottom half of the bracket is lying a Cinderella team waiting to explode onto the scene. It happens every year and make no mistake this year will be no different there will be major upsets of top seeds and the cinderella team will get the star treatment from the fans and the media.
Isn’t that what March Madness is really all about finding that underdog team that will fight it’s way to unimaginable heights. Slaying the Goliath teams with incredible team efforts and amazing individual performances. Everyone loves the underdog everyone loves the Cinderella story. Especially those people that like to put a little money on the tournament, there is big money to be had if you can pick a team that makes a run from way back in the pack.
People all over the country are getting their NCAA mojo all together getting ready for their office bracket pools and setting dates for NCAA march madness viewing parties. Like I said selection Sunday is March 15th and the opening round of the tournament will begin on March 17th with two full weeks of NCAA madness to follow up to the grand finale on April 4th thru 6th.
So who will be your number one team going into the tournament? Will it be the team from UConn or the team from North Carolina? Or is your number one team another team like Oklahoma, Pitt, Kansas or even Michigan? Again like I said in terms of the top teams there may be a little jockeying from one place to the next but obviously all those teams I mentioned are going to be in the top tier of the NCAA tournament. What about some of the teams that are on the bubble right now and may finish the season watching the NCAA tournament from their TVs at home. Teams like Virginia Tech, Miami, Penn State and Texas A & M are all on the bubble right now and their invitations for the big dance are in jeopardy right now. They will really need to step and have some big games to finish out their season and the divisional tournaments.
If you go to the normal sport sites that keep track and stats of NCAA teams through out the year you will begin to see them posting projections for what the tournament bracket will look like. You might also see a few mock ups of what the brackets will look like come selection Sunday. I honestly feel that all these projections and mock ups of the draft just adds to the pressure that is on these teams to perform. It all adds to the madness of March for the NCAA tournament.
OK one last thought for some bold predictions on what I might pick as underdog Cinderella stories once the NCAA tournament begins. The two teams that have gotten hot lately and played themselves into the tournament down the stretch. I will pick Oklahoma State and Creighton to be my underdog Cinderella teams for the NCAA tournament this year. Why not it’s not costing me anything to put it out there
