Here we are at the end of the 12th WNBA season on the eve of the final game between the Sparks and the Liberty as they meet in the final game to decide which will face off against the Silver Stars of San Antonio. That’s right for the first time in franchise history the San Antonio Silver Stars will be represented in the WNBA Finals. These championship finals will be bringing an end to the WNBA’s most successful season for viewership and attendance as across the board the numbers were up for the WNBA this year.
You can track this back all the way to May when the season started with a record 14 sellout crowds to start and a record 46 through out the entire season. The WNBA website also logged record numbers of hits and streaming video clips for the year as well. The most telling numbers of course is that of TV viewership and those number for ABC and ESPN2 have also seen year round increases with some estimates putting them over 18%+ over last year alone. Another telling sign that the league is really starting to hit it’s stride is merchandising as jersey sales are also up over a whopping 45%+ over last year as well. This is all great news for what is already the most successful and longest running professional sports league for women in America.
With that said there are still millions of NBA fans that have not tapped into the WNBA excitement. I think that having survived 12 years and showing that the league does indeed belong on a national level. It’s time that the major media and corporate sponsorships especially to start jumping on the WNBA bandwagon. All those companies that are out there pushing the NBA stars and their teams need to start paying attention and giving some corporate sponsorship props to some of the superstars of the WNBA.
What are your thoughts on the WNBA? Are you one of the millions of NBA fans that have still not given the WNBA a second thought? If so now is the best time to get a little taste of what you are missing as the finals are about to begin. Please share your opinions about the WNBA and thanks for reading.
